SUICIDES —
ABORIGINALS
398. Hon ADELE FARINA to the
Minister for Mental Health:
I refer to the Aboriginal suicides
graph tabled by the minister earlier today, and noting that the source of the
data was a coroner's report I ask the minister to give an undertaking
to table the coroner's report at tomorrow's sitting; and, if
not, why not?

The coroner's report is
provided to me in confidence each quarter. Any member of Parliament can ask a
question of the Attorney General, who will provide that information to them. I
think that if the member would actually like to have that information, it is
preferable that she ask the coroner's representative in this house—the
Attorney General. I know that has been done by members of the opposition from
time to time, and they get the report I get in confidence. So, although I am
not prepared to table a report that has been given to me in confidence—it
is only given to me in confidence in that way—the member has every
right to ask the Attorney General for the information that she wants from the
coroner's report and she will get it. But please do not ask me to table
something that has been given to me in confidence, and therefore would
potentially damage —
Hon Adele Farina : Y ou used it for your graph!
Hon HELEN MORTON : I did not put individual numbers in
there, as the member knows, and the coroner's report is in far greater
detail than that. It shows it by region, it shows it by age group, it shows it
by Aboriginality et cetera. The information I provided and used on that graph
was to show the trend, and the member got that information. If the member wants
the exact figures and the information in the detail that she wants it, please
ask it of the coroner through the Attorney General. That is the appropriate way
to go. The member should not ask me to table confidential information.
