JULIEKA IVANNA DHU — DEATH IN CUSTODY
1222. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to an undated letter authored by Dr Philip
Montgomery, the Regional Medical Director WA Country Health Service in the
Pilbara region to a member of the Miss Dhu's family, and reference to
the issues pertaining to Miss Dhu's presentation at the Port Hedland
Health Campus—PHHC—on 4 August at 12.45.
(1) Was Miss
Dhu pulseless and not breathing at the time of presentation by the police?
(2) If yes to
(1), did the police identify how long she had been in this state?
(3) For how
long was resuscitation attempted?
(4) Was any
contact made with the PHHC by the police prior to their arrival with Miss Dhu
that they were bringing a lifeless person to the PHHC for emergency treatment;
and, if so, at what time?
(5) Was an
intravenous access device used on the lateral aspect of the top of Miss Dhu's
right foot?
(6) If yes to
(5), for what purpose was this device used?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question. The following has been provided to me by the Minister for Health. As
Miss Dhu was, immediately before her death, a person held in care, there must
be a coronial inquest into her death. Pending the completion of that inquest,
it would not be appropriate for me to answer this question.
