The tender submitted by Consolidated Constructions for the sealing of the Marble Bar Road was assessed by Main Roads before the decision was made to award the Company the contract. The Public Accounts Committee is conducting an inquiry into Contracts entered into between Consolidated Constructions Pty Ltd and Main Roads WA and the Public Transport Authority. The Committee will report its findings and recommendations to the Legislative Assembly by September 2004. (3)-(4) The hardships encountered by traders and sub-contractors as a result of the collapse of Consolidated Constructions is acknowledged. The State Government has moved quickly to assist where possible by announcing in April 2004 that special preference would be given to affected sub-contractors when tendering for flood damage repair works. A number of the former Marble Bar Road sub-contractors have already been engaged under this arrangement. Tenders for further works, including reinstatement of the approaches to the Maitland River Bridge are expected to be called in the coming weeks and will provide additional opportunities.
