PERTH BACKUP ENERGY SUPPLY — LIQUID NATURAL GAS STORAGE FACILITY
I note that the energy minister recently stated that it would cost in the order of $1.6 billion to build a new facility to store liquid natural gas in the metropolitan area as part of a backup energy supply system for the area generally serviced by the Karratha to Perth gas pipeline. Will the minister provide evidence of the research undertaken by government departments, agencies or other relevant bodies to support the cost of approximately $1.6 billion? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank Hon George Cash for providing some notice of the question. In an interview about the gas disruption on the ABC Stateline program broadcast on 20 June 2008, the Minister for Energy made the point that an LNG terminal will cost about $1.6 billion. This was to emphasise the high cost of such infrastructure; for instance, it reflects the cost of the LNG terminal in Darwin. Further, during his visit to the LNG15 conference held in Barcelona in May last year, the minister was also made aware of the installation costs for the re-gasification facilities and LNG storage facilities being built in the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain.
