STAGE 5 WATER RESTRICTIONS — DENMARK
212. Hon SALLY TALBOT to the
minister representing the Minister for Water:
I refer to the extension of stage 5 water restrictions in
place for Denmark to 29 May 2015.
(1) To date, how many litres of water have been saved by the
restrictions?
(2) What is the designated target of saving, and will this
target be reached by the end of May?
(3) Has the
maintenance of water supplies through winter been secured; and, if not, what
further action is planned?
(4) Have low
level drinking water dams and/or the supplementation of supplies with water
from Denmark River dam required treatment with additional or different biocides
to maintain water quality?
(5) If yes to (4), what biocides and in what quantity?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) During
December 2014 and January 2015, the Denmark community has helped save an
estimated 9.7 million litres of water.
(2) The target is
to save 50 million litres of water by the 2015–16 summer. Water
Corporation will continue to work with the community to achieve this target.
Several factors, including winter rainfall and water-saving programs, will
impact on achieving this target.
(3) Denmark's water supplies
are sufficient to meet demand over the coming winter.
(4) Yes.
(5) The biocide
is potassium permanganate, and the dosage levels are 0.030 milligrams a litre
to 0.042 milligrams a litre, depending on varying levels of manganese present
in dam water.
