COMMERCIAL BOAT TOUR LICENCES - MONKEY MIA
I refer the minister to his press release dated 26 June announcing a reduction in commercial boat tour licences at Monkey Mia. (1) Will the minister table the report prepared by Dr Lars Bejder concerning dolphins at Red Cliff Bay; and, if not, why not? (2) Will the minister table the unpublished research report concerning dolphins at Monkey Mia; and, if not, why not? (3) Did the minister consider reducing the number of research vessels in the area as a means of reducing engine and propeller impacts on dolphins, as an alternative to cutting back on tourism operations; and, if not, why not? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. On behalf of the Minister for the Environment - (1) Yes, I am happy to table the documents because they are quite heavy and they are interfering with the symmetry and organisation of my files! I table the report “Linking short and long-term effects of nature-based tourism on cetaceans” by Dr Lars Bejder. (2) Yes. I hereby table the report “Report on the Status of the Monkey Mia Dolphin Mothers and Calves” by Dr Janet Mann. (3) Mr Bejder’s study demonstrated that the impact from research vessels was less significant than that from the tour vessels. As part of the minister’s decision, there is to be a moratorium on any increased research vessel activity within the Red Cliff Bay area. [See paper 1664.]
