(1) A review of the speed enforcement operating in WA is currently underway which seeks to reduce the incidence of speeding on our roads through the implementation of best practice initiatives in speed enforcement including on-road policing by officers using hand held devices and the use of camera technology.
The Enhanced Speed Enforcement Steering Committee was established in 2007, at the request of the then Minister for Community Safety. The Committee is responsible for co-ordinating the development of a strategy to enhance speed enforcement and develop a supporting business case for consideration by Government.
In 2009, the Committee expects to make recommendations to increase the effectiveness of speed enforcement operations substantially which will include replacement camera technology. A Request for Tender process is currently being conducted to engage a consultant to develop a business case to support options to strategically enhance speed enforcement in Western Australia.
(2) It is anticipated that the business case work will be completed and recommendations available for consideration by Government by mid 2009.
(3) It is anticipated that a tendering process could take place in 2009.
(4) The Minister met with Tenix Solutions, a manufacturer of speed detection technologies, on 5 November 2008.
