DETENTION — UNIT 18, CASUARINA PRISON
942. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to youth detention.
(1) How many superintendents has unit 18 had since it opened
in July 2022?
(2) How many
young people were at unit 18 and Banksia Hill Detention Centre on 14 August and
20 August respectively?
(3) Will the
minister commit to closing unit 18 immediately or as soon as works on the
Jasper wing are completed?

I thank the member for some notice of the question. I provide
the following answer on behalf of the Minister for Corrective Services.
(1) The answer is five.
(2) As of 14 August
2024, there were four young people at unit 18 and 53 at Banksia Hill Detention
Centre. As of 20 August 2024, there are four young people at unit 18 and 58 at
Banksia Hill.
(3) As has been confirmed previously, unit 18 will be
closed as soon as a suitable alternative facility is available.
