A parliamentary question probes the Minister for Mines and Petroleum's comments on unconventional gas and renewable energy, specifically regarding whether unconventional gas is considered renewable and if criticisms from those disliking renewable energy are 'mischievous'. The Minister's response denies the existence of unconventional gas in WA, rendering the questions inapplicable.

UNCONVENTIONAL GAS — MINISTER FOR MINES AND
PETROLEUM — COMMENTS
828. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the
minister representing the Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
I refer to an
interview on the ABC Radio National Breakfast program on 31 July 2014 regarding fracking for unconventional gas—tight
gas, shale gas and coal seam gas—in the Canning Basin, in which the
Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Mr Marmion, said, ''A lot of
mischievous comments are being made by people who don't like renewable
energy, but I have to say gas is a very clean fuel .''
(1) Does the minister stand by his comments
that unconventional gas is a renewable form of energy?
(2) If the answer is yes, could the minister
please explain how this is the case; and, if the answer is no, what is his
position regarding the relationship between unconventional gas and renewable
energy?
(3) In this context, can the minister point
to a single mischievous comment made by people who do not like renewable
energy?
