Regarding the Straits Salt proposal for 10 000 hectares of evaporative saltpans in an area potentially to be included in the proposed Ningaloo World Heritage Area, I ask -
(1) Has anything been done to advance the proposal for the creation of a Fish Habitat Protection Area in the same location, since my question without notice No. 2941 of June 3 2004?
(2) If yes to (1), what has been done?
(3) If no to (1), why not?
(4) In any event, by when will the proposed Fish Habitat Protection Area for that location be created?

(1 - 3) The possibility of creating a Fish Habitat Protection Area in the east and south east of Exmouth Gulf was raised in the draft Fisheries Environmental Management Plan for the Gascoyne region. This proposal for a Fish Habitat Protection Area attracted support from some sectors of the community and concern by others. A similar area was also proposed for consideration as a Marine Reserve that if established, would mean the Fish Habitat Protection Area would cease to exist. Subsequently, the Government has made a number of commitments in relation to marine planning including the development of a comprehensive and integrated approach to regional marine planning, development of a marine sanctuary policy based on the best available science, and a review of the institutional, legislative and policy framework for marine park planning. Underpinning these commitments is recognition of the importance of stakeholder participation in marine planning and policy development and a State Marine Policy Stakeholders Group, to be comprised of representatives of peak non-Government organisations with an interest in the marine environment, is being established. (4) The possible creation of a Fish Habitat Protection Area within Exmouth Gulf will be reviewed in the implementation of the Government's policy commitments outlined in 3.
