Can the minister advise what action has been taken to diversify the membership of port authority boards? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for Kimberley for this question. No doubt, the member has been inspired to reflect on port authority board membership by International Women’s Day, which was on Saturday. We have been generally keen to ensure that there are a range of skill sets on each of the port authority boards. One area of particular concern was that of the 42 positions on the eight port authority boards, only two, or two per cent, were occupied by women. We thought that that was a sad indictment of the coalition Government’s attitude towards the capacity of women, particularly those in regional Western Australia. We are pleased to announce that we now have a girl in every port! There are now 11 women on port authority boards, and they comprise 26 per cent of all port authority board members. We have found some women of extraordinary capacity. For example, one young woman, aged 29, manages an international meat exporting company and is a member of the Albany Port Authority board. A young female engineer with a non-English speaking background who runs her own power engineering company in Bunbury is on the Bunbury Port Authority board. There are women with competencies and skills in a wide range of areas. Megan Anwyl - a very capable lawyer - is another example of someone who will add greatly to the membership of the Esperance Port Authority board. In Esperance we have also appointed Toni Hawkins, who for the past four years has been in charge of the community-port liaison group and has been doing a fantastic job in getting a better interaction between the community and the port authority. We are very proud of our achievements with our port authority board memberships.
