I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
On 1 September 2014, I received an
invitation from Senator Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for
Education, inviting Western Australia to participate in the national school
chaplaincy program 2015–2018. On 12 September 2014, the state
government accepted the invitation to participate, subject to further
discussion and negotiation. The procedure for schools to apply for funding for
the new program will be determined once an agreement with the commonwealth has
been reached.
I understand that some schools have
counsellors as opposed to chaplains. They are the ones that will be affected. I
think 16 will be affected. We will work with those schools. As we work through
the fine detail of the agreement, we will be able to give those schools more
certainty. That will be expedited as a priority, mindful of the fact that we
are coming to the end of term 3.
