Education:
(1) Will any of
the money allocated in this year's budget for the expansion of Shenton
College be spent on expanding the enrolment capacity of the deaf education

able to take?
(2) If none of
the allocation will be spent expanding the enrolment capacity of the deaf

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) No. The
enrolment capacity will remain at 30 students.
(2) Shenton
College and Shenton College Deaf Education Centre are two separate schools,
with their own principals, staff and budgets. Shenton College caters for
students within a defined local intake area in the western suburbs. Students in
this intake area have an entitlement to attend Shenton College. The expansion
of Shenton College is occurring to ensure that there is sufficient capacity to
enable enrolment for all entitled students.
Shenton College Deaf Education Centre
does not have a local intake area. Along with Belmont City College, it offers a
specialist deaf education program for students across the state. Between these
two programs, there are sufficient places available for students with hearing
loss who require high levels of support.
