Does the Department own or operate any golf-carts across any prisoners or detention centres, and if so: (a) Per facility, how many golf carts are owned/operated; (b) What was the purchase cost of each golf-cart in what financial year; (c) What was the most recent average cost to maintain the golf-carts; (d) Do prisoners or detainees have the ability to drive/operate the golf-carts and if so: (i) Why; and (e) Do prisoners or detainees have the ability to ride in the golf-carts (i.e. being driven by a corrections officer) and if so: (i) Why?

The Department of Justice advises:

(c) The Department of Justice is unable to identify from overall site maintenance costs. The specific cost of maintaining the carts/buggies varies because in many prisons maintenance work is carried out by prison services.
(d) Yes
a. These vehicles are utilised at prisons to assist with industry job functions such as (but not limited to) laundry services, delivery of food/stores, garden equipment and collection of rubbish. If a prisoner is assigned a particular function/job as part of their duties within the prison and it requires them to operate such a vehicle they will be required to do so.
(e) Yes.
a. It is part of their industry job function, as per the above.
