EDUCATION — school attendance
I have a supplementary question. In light of the fact that minister cut $4.5 million—50 per cent—of the education participation program, is this not the very reason that the Commissioner of Police is now having to sweep up children off the streets of our city? Dr E. CONSTABLE

The answer to that is, no — Mr B.S. Wyatt : Of course it is, minister, and you know it is. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Members! Dr E. CONSTABLE : Because, Mr Speaker — Mr B.S. Wyatt : It was a fool’s saving—$4.5 million from the program that was designed to deal with these students—leading to an 80 per cent increase. The SPEAKER : Member for Victoria Park, if you expect an answer, just listen for a while. Dr E. CONSTABLE : All I can say is that attendance between the year 2000 and 2008 fell, and since we have come into government, we have seen an upturn in attendance at schools. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean, I formally call you to order for the first time, along with the member for Victoria Park and the member for Mandurah.
