GLOSS MEDIA
I refer to the forthcoming Perth Fashion Festival. (1) Is it true that fashion modelling agencies and administrative staff employed by Gloss Media at last year’s festival as of last month had not been paid? (2) Have these agencies and staff members now been paid? (3) Was Gloss Media placed under administration and wound up in November 2005? (4) Are some of the same people who were involved in the management of Gloss Media now in receipt of state government funding to run this year’s festival? Ms S.M. McHALE

I thank the member for her question and the member for Cottesloe for his advocacy on behalf of one of the people who, I understand, has not been paid. (1)-(2) In 2005, the government funded the Perth Fashion Festival with an amount of $53 000 for very specific outcomes. The money was to support emerging fashion designers. There is some great talent in Western Australia in the fashion industry and this government has been very keen to support and develop our fashion industry. The fact is, however, that that money was not provided to pay any of the administration costs relating to salaries. I am aware that one person has not received her salary as the member for Cottesloe has been advocating on her behalf. However, the funding was not for staffing. Therefore, it is unfortunate that that person, for whatever contractual reason, has not been paid. That, however, is a matter for her, her lawyers and Gloss Media. I can report that the funding from the 2005 festival was acquitted in accordance with the requirements that the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Culture and the Arts imposed upon the company. (3) Yes. (4) I cannot provide a response on the detail of this issue, other than to say that the director of the company who was involved in 2005 is no longer involved in 2006. He was the main person.
