(e) Where the business area provides a substantiated case that a six cylinder vehicle is required to carry out the tasks, it is departmental policy that a LPG vehicle is obtained. If there are likely to be difficulties in the availability of LPG, a dual fuel vehicle provides an alternative whilst still maximising the benefits of LPG. The use of LPG in these vehicles is monitored and the department maintains a benchmark percentage for LPG usage.

(e) The Department's assessment process to approve a lease of a 6 cylinder vehicle includes consideration of an LPG vehicle as an alternative. However, the primary strategy has been to replace 6 cylinder vehicles with 4 cylinder vehicles that meet national emission standards and are a cheaper, practical alternative.

(e) Legal Aid selects four-cylinder vehicles except where a clear business case can be made for six cylinders.WA Government Fleet Policy requires agencies to have 25% of new or replacement six-cylinder vehicles to be LPG-powered vehicles except where there is clear justificaiton to the contrary.Legal Aid has 27% of six-cylinder LPG powered vehicles.
However, 60% of the vehicles owned or leased by Legal Aid are utilised for travel to remote regional areas, and six-cylinder petrol-powered vehicles are required particularly as LPG availability is limited in some regional areas. The higher proportion of vehicles required to travel to remote regional areas means there is limited scope to increase the proportion of six-cylinder vehicles powered by LPG.
