HOMELESSNESS —
CITY OF BUNBURY
1363. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the minister representing the
Minister for Homelessness:
I refer to the
minister's decision in September to reject a request from the City of
Bunbury for assistance in provisioning temporary crisis accommodation to help
the city's growing population of rough sleepers.
(1) Is the minister aware of reports that people are currently sleeping
in unsafe conditions on land located in Bunbury that is owned by the state
government?
(2) Does the minister stand by his comments to ABC South West WA that
he had received advice that the site proposed for the shelter was ''not
appropriate''?
(3) If yes to (2), is the minister aware that the Mayor of Bunbury is
reported as saying that no location was identified in his letter of request to
him?
(4) What is the
date of the alleged advice and who provided it to the minister?
(5) So as to put
beyond doubt whether the minister truly received such advice, will the minister
table it?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following response has been provided by the
Minister for Homelessness.
(1)–(5) The state government funds 10 specialist homeless support services
throughout the south west region at a cost
of $4.8 million. This year alone, services in the south west have received an
additional funding boost of more than $1.2 million. Djuripiny Mia is
also delivering permanent housing with wraparound supports and has so far
transitioned 43 individuals who were formerly sleeping rough into long-term
sustainable housing in Bunbury. The minister has met with the City of Bunbury and other
organisations in the region on a number of occasions, and a specific location
for a potential accommodation site was identified. This site is not suitable
for residential purposes.
