ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS - COMMENTS ABOUT MINISTER, AND APPOINTMENT OF LIEUTENANT GENERAL SANDERSON
I have a supplementary question. I strongly agree with the appointment. Is it not now the case that the position of the Minister for Indigenous Affairs has been made redundant? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

Let me ask the member a question in return: was the member ever the Minister for Indigenous Affairs? Dr K.D. Hames : Indeed. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : The very fact that I have to ask the question reflects on his record in the role. Dr K.D. Hames : I don’t think so. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : The member did his best to make the role redundant. There is more to being the Minister for Indigenous Affairs than travelling to the Kimberley and going on a fishing trip with members of the department! That is all he ever did. All he ever did in his role as minister was organise fishing trips! He had absolutely no ability to make the role proactive - none. We on this side of the house have a very strong commitment to indigenous affairs. It is obvious that we have. It is something that the other side cannot stomach. They cannot accept it; they cannot stomach it. Of course, the answer to the question is: do not be ridiculous.
