SUICIDE
PREVENTION — FUNDING
630. Hon ADELE FARINA to the
Minister for Mental Health:
I refer to the $3 million for suicide prevention in the 2014–15
budget.
(1) How will that money be spent?
(2) Will any of the money be
available as funding grants to non-government organisations?
(3) When will
details be made available to NGOs on when and how to lodge funding applications
and the criteria to be satisfied?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) The $3 million
investment will continue the state's suicide prevention strategy.
Funding of $1 million in 2014–15 will deliver community grants of up to
$10 000 to strengthen the sustainability of locally owned suicide prevention
initiatives; evidence-based mental health and suicide prevention training to be
rolled out across Western Australia for around 600 people in local communities;
and strategic partnerships with the West Australian Football Commission and
netball association of Western Australia to promote universal suicide
prevention awareness. Funding of $2 million in 2014–15 will consolidate
and increase the capacity of the response to self-harm and suicides in schools,
which includes additional specialist staff to support young people at risk.
(2) Yes.
(3) I am pleased
to announce that the first round of small grants will open on 18 June 2014 and
will close on 31 July 2014. Community action plan host agencies, local drug
action groups and local governments are encouraged to apply, and the criteria
are outlined in the grant application form on the Mental Health Commission's
website. Projects are supported that build community awareness about suicide
prevention, services and supports; strengthen resilience to respond to the
risks, signs and impacts of suicide; help sustain local suicide prevention
strategies across the state; and involve suicide prevention activities that are
sustainable and utilise local initiatives, local resources and local people.
This builds on the previous suicide prevention small grants and training
funding of $250 000, which closed on 14 February 2014.
