CANE TOADS
My question is to the minister for cane toads - sorry, the Minister for the Environment! Will the minister inform the house of the support the state government is providing the community to combat the spread of nasty cane toads? Mr M. McGOWAN

I thank the member for Kimberley for the question. Two weeks ago a cane toad arrived in Western Australia on a truck that travelled to WA from Queensland. It was discovered at a freight depot in Kewdale by quick-thinking workers, who captured it, and it was subsequently destroyed. The truck in which it arrived was sealed and sent back to Queensland. That demonstrates that in the state government’s efforts to raise - Mr T.R. Buswell : You’re on the job! Mr M. McGOWAN : The member for Vasse is too much. Even the member for Leschenault, who I would have thought could put up with anything, cannot put up with sitting next to the member for Vasse today. As I understand it, the powers that be in the Liberal Party will convert the member for Leschenault into a eunuch for going against the ticket in the recent leadership ballot. The truck was sealed and sent back to Queensland. That shows the value of the government’s efforts to raise public awareness of this threat to the state. We are in the process of spending $500 000 on a public awareness campaign about cane toads so that people will be able to identify them and report any findings to the authorities, who will capture them. In addition, we are spending $2 million on other initiatives including border security and surveillance, development and control technologies, and on the identification and minimisation of the impact of cane toads on the state’s biodiversity. Imagine my surprise when I heard the current shadow Minister for the Environment say on 28 February that he was impressed that the commonwealth government was to spend $80 000 for the Kimberley Toad Busters. He was very impressed, and he wished the state government would match that commitment. We are putting half a million dollars into the Stop The Toad Foundation, and an additional $2 million into fighting this threat. Therefore, we can see which level of government is taking this threat seriously.
