I thank the member for Southern River for the question and acknowledge his great contribution to the racing industry; he is a great advocate for the racing industry. Like the rest of Western Australia, the racing industry is doing very well. Racing and Wagering Western Australia has just released its wagering and turnover figures for the year to date that show growth of more than 10 per cent and a record turnover of $1.3 billion. That means over the time that Racing and Wagering WA - a creation of this government - has been in existence, growth in turnover has been 35 per cent. I am proud of that result for the industry. The industry employees thousands of Western Australians. It is the fastest-growing racing industry in Australia, it has the best governance system in the country, and we in Western Australia have the lowest level of problem gambling by half. In addition, the industry produces $60 million in taxes a year that go into schools, hospitals and roads producing social benefits throughout the city and the country. In addition, the Gallop and Carpenter governments over their terms will have cut taxes and improved racing infrastructure grants to the industry to the tune of $80 million. I urge the industry not to be complacent, but to make sure that it engages in ongoing reform and business improvement to improve the industry. We have undertaken reform at a macro level; it is up to the industry itself now to undertake reform at a micro level to improve its businesses so that it can enjoy a golden future that has been set during the term of this government.
