I refer the Minister to the promise in the
Mining Safety and Inspection Act
for the issuing of Provisional Improvement Notices (PINS) at mining work places, and ask -
(1) Does the Department of Industry and Resources keep records of the issuing of PINS on each mine site?
(2) If so, how many PINS have been issued?
(3) On which sites were they issued?

Answer (1) No. There is no mechanism by which the department would become aware of the issuing of a PIN, unless there was a request for review by the person who was issued with the notice, the principal employer at or the manager of the mine in respect of which the notice was issued. In such a case, the operation of the PIN would be suspended and an inspector would attend at the mine to conduct a review as soon as practicable. Upon review, the inspector would either - ? affirm the notice (with or without modifications) upon which the PIN would have effect of an improvement notice issued by the inspector. or ? cancel the notice. Consequently, it is not possible for the Department to say how many PINs may have been issued or at which mines. (2) See response to (1). (3) See response to (1).
