Dr. Edwards questions the Minister for the Environment regarding the amount of old growth jarrah and karri forest available for logging and reserved, both before and after the release of the Ferguson report, broken down by forest region. The report led to a decrease in karri available for logging and an increase in karri reserves.

The Minister Replied:
(1) (a) Prior to the release of the report by the Ministerial Advisory Group on Karri and Tingle (known as the Ferguson report) on 15 December 1999, under the Regional Forest Agreement and the Forest Management Plan (1994-2003) the area of old growth jarrah forest on CALM managed land that was available for harvesting was 74,800 hectares. This figure is based on CALM's Forest Management Information System datasets incorporating harvesting to the end of December 1999.
(b) Prior to the release of the Ferguson report, under the Regional Forest Agreement and the Forest Management Plan (1994-2003) the area of old growth jarrah forest on CALM managed land that was reserved, proposed for reservation, and set aside from timber harvesting was 189,400 hectares.
(2) The areas were as follows:
Available Reserved, proposed for reservation, and set aside from timber harvesting
Swan Region 400 ha 7,200 ha
Central Forest Region 17,800 ha 41,900 ha
Southern Forest Region 56,600 ha 140,300 ha
(3) &
(4) See (1) and (2) above. The Ferguson report, and consequent Government decisions, did not consider changes to the availability of jarrah forest for harvesting or reservation.
(5) (a) Prior to the release of the Ferguson report, under the Regional Forest Agreement and the Forest Management Plan (1994-2003) the area of old growth karri forest on CALM managed land that was available for harvesting was 16,800 hectares. This figure is based on CALM's Forest Management Information System datasets incorporating harvesting to the end of December 1999.
(b) Prior to the release of the Ferguson report, under the Regional Forest Agreement and Forest Management Plan (1994-2003) the area of old growth karri forest on CALM managed land that was reserved, proposed for reservation, and set aside from timber harvesting was 46,400 hectares.
(6) The areas were as follows:
Available Reserved, proposed for reservation, and set aside from timber harvesting
Swan Region 0 0
Central Forest Region 0 100 ha
Southern Forest Region 16,800 ha 46,300 ha
(7) In addition to the areas set aside from timber harvesting under the Regional Forest Agreement, the Ferguson report recommended that additional areas of karri forest be set aside from harvesting.
(a) After the Ferguson report, and consequent Government decisions the area of old growth karri forest on CALM managed land that was available for harvesting was approximately 7,600 hectares.
(b) After the Ferguson report, and consequent Government decisions, the area of old growth karri forest on CALM managed land that was reserved, proposed for reservation, and set aside from timber harvesting was approximately 55,600 hectares.
(8) The approximate areas of old growth karri forest that are available for harvesting or reserved in each Forest Region following the release of the Ferguson report are as follows:
Available Reserved
Swan Region 0 0
Central Forest Region 0 100 ha
Southern Forest Region 7,600 ha 55,500 ha
