With regard to the Machinery of Government Taskforce report, without justification the Government proposes to take the specialist international education and marketing role away from the Education Department and give it to a generic industry and technology department with no special education and marketing skills. (1) With the marketing and promotion for the Education Department and other international education providers to be undertaken by the department of industry and technology, what expertise and networking will be relevant to the Education Department’s needs? (2) Does this mean that the marketing to date has been deficient? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) Approval was granted to the Education Department in November 2000 to extend the international fee-paying student program for secondary students. This had operated previously on a trial basis in a limited number of schools. A number of agencies have had involvement with this program. The trial program was not actively promoted. The current proposal for the department of industry and technology to undertake marketing of international education is aimed at achieving a coordinated approach to marketing in terms of access to the widest possible networks for the provision of services, educational materials and products, an integrated approach by providers and best value for money from advertising and recruitment effort.
