(1) To whom will Mr Oates be responsible—the minister or the Premier? (2) Is Mr Oates employed full time or part time? (3) Under what type of contract is Mr Oates employed? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the member for the question. (1)-(3) I am delighted that Peter Oates has taken on a role as a consultant with the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. He is responsible to the Premier. Having said that, he is providing advice to me on energy issues. We are faced with significant issues with regard to the energy portfolio, none less than the fact that Verve is running at a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars. We are seeking advice from a raft of stakeholders throughout the community about what we can do with Verve. Peter Oates has considerable experience in the energy sector. Among his credentials is that he went to North Kalgoorlie Primary School and Eastern Goldfields Senior High School, which in itself makes him eminently qualified. Aside from that, he served more than 20 years with Western Power. His experience with both Western Power and the private sector is probably second to none. I met Peter Oates not long after I took on this role. The information and detailed knowledge he has on the energy sector in Western Australia is second to none. He is engaged by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and is under ministerial contracts for service to provide advisory services to the government—to me. Mr Oates’ extraordinary experience — Hon Kate Doust : Is he full time or part time? Hon PETER COLLIER : He is employed and will be paid on an hourly contract basis. He is representing me on the Gas Supply and Emergency Management Committee, which is a great opportunity for us to provide gas security throughout Western Australia. I can understand why the question might be asked, but I recommended to the Premier that we access Mr Oates’ expertise in the area of energy. I am pleased that the Premier was forthcoming and I am delighted to have Peter Oates on board.
