In reference to the Minister's answer to Question on Notice 6815 about the road from Newman to Marble Bar via Nullagine, I ask:
(a) on what date was the preliminary assessment of the requirement to seal this road undertaken by Main Roads; and
(i) what funds were allocated to conduct this assessment, will the Minister table a copy of the assessment, and if not, why not; and
(b) what sections of this road are to be resheeted in 2011–12 from the $1.5 million allocated and what is the timeline for the works to commence and be completed;
(c) what other works on this road are to be undertaken in 2011–12 or are budgeted for in the forward estimates, and which of these works are funded by resource companies, excluding the $3 million flood-proofing of the Kalgan Floodway and the sealing of the 24 kilometre section of the road near Roy Hill north of the Fortescue River; and
(i) what is the time line for the sealing of this 24 kms section; and
(d) does the State Government accept the view that there is an urgent need to have this whole road upgraded and sealed along its whole length to meet the current pressures on this inland road, and if not, why not?

Main Roads West Australia advises:
(a) The "preliminary assessment" was undertaken in 2010/11
(i) Work was undertaken by staff within the existing departmental budget.
(b) More than 25 kilometres of road will be re-sheeted, beginning and ending in 2012.
(c) Repairs to pavement failures south of Fortescue River will be undertaken in addition to the normal annual maintenance of the unsealed sections.
(i) It is anticipated that the realignment and sealing of the 24 kilometre section will be completed in 2012.
(d) The State Government recognises the pressures on the Marble Bar Road. However, funding of any upgrading works must be considered in light of other priorities both within the Pilbara and the rest of the State.
