I thank the member for Forrestfield
for the question.
The start of the school year is a
nervous time not only for students, particularly those starting school for the
first time, but also for my people in Building Management and Works who are
responsible for making sure that every student has a classroom. This year our
government delivered four new primary schools on time and on budget, and I am
very proud to say that to all members in this house. The four new schools are
Alkimos Primary School, valued at $14 million; Harrisdale Primary School,
valued at $15.2 million; Anne Hamersley Primary School in Ellenbrook, valued at
$15.8 million; and Rivergums Primary School in Baldivis, valued at $18.8 million.
They were all completed on time and on budget. Importantly, all four schools
employed 1 700 people over the construction period, and they are part of a $300
million program that we have delivered for schools in Western Australia. Each
of these schools is state-of-the-art, with air-conditioning, nature playgrounds
and, of course, interactive whiteboards. They are state-of-the-art facilities
for our very important young students. Each school can accommodate 430 students
from kindergarten right through to year 6.
I will just finish with this. One of
the other aspects of delivering these programs is the one per cent for art.
There is unique art at each of these primary schools, and I will just highlight
one at Alkimos, and congratulate Ms Judith Forrest on actually creating some
unique artworks that highlight or embrace the topics of inclusion and the value
of difference in schools. These are very important lessons and values for
students. Congratulations to my staff in Building Management and Works on
delivering four new primary schools on time and on budget.
