On 17 July I directed a letter to the minister’s office requesting urgent consideration and attention be given to the Ballinyoo Bridge, No 837, on the Carnarvon-Mullewa Road before it becomes a classic case of failed duty of care.  As I am not in receipt of the minister’s reply today and as the need for urgent maintenance to this bridge was identified as far back as 1998, will the minister please advise when upgrading of this bridge is planned to commence? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

Main Roads has investigated this matter and is in the process of providing the minister with advice on the situation.  A formal reply will be provided to the member within the next week. The minister understands that the 1998 assessment of the Ballinyoo Bridge referred to, provided information on the bridge’s durability rather than its structural capacity.  Although the assessment suggests repairs to overcome durability issues, the requirement to undertake the works is not considered to be structurally urgent.  The bridge is considered to be structurally adequate, and works will be considered for future funding in light of overall statewide priorities.
