DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE — SHIPBUILDING CONTRACT AT HENDERSON
I refer to a recent announcement that has resulted in a local business, BAE Systems, missing out on a contract with the Department of Defence for shipbuilding works at Henderson. (1) What action, if any, did the government take to ensure that Western Australia received a share of this important federal government contract? (2) When did the minister become aware that Western Australia was not going to receive this contract? (3) What assistance will he provide to ensure that the shipbuilding industry in this state is secure? Hon BARRY HOUSE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The Department of Commerce worked closely with local industry on this project. The government promoted the capability of local manufacturers and Australian Marine Complex infrastructure to the federal government and ASC Pty Ltd. The department encouraged the establishment of the Western Australian Major Projects group and assisted with its prequalification bid for this project. WAMP is an alliance of local manufacturers that joined together to bid for major fabrication projects. Although WAMP was one of a few organisations that was short-listed for this project and invited to formally bid for the modules, the group elected not to submit a bid. (2) When the preferred suppliers were announced by the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance on 9 May 2009. (3) The ship building and repair industry is a priority sector within the Department of Commerce’s science, innovation and business division. The department is actively involved in working on a number of projects to ensure that the local ship building and repair industry continues to grow. Later this year the state will commission its 99-metre floating dock and associated infrastructure, which is designed to assist Western Australia’s ship building and repair industry to grow.
