I refer to the Ministers comments in the 20 January 2013 Media Statement Government to expand GPS tracking of offenders , specifically that “funding for the project would be sought through the standard budgetary processes” and ask: (a) has the $8 million in funding been obtained, and if not, why not; and (b) given that the Government announced the program over a year ago, when does the Minister expect to have the capacity to track serial arsonists and domestic violence offenders?

(a) -(b) The Government is currently developing legislation to introduce post-sentence supervision orders for a range of violent offenders, including serial arsonists and domestic violence offenders. The Government anticipates introducing this legislation into Parliament in the 2014 Spring session. This legislation will include the ability to require offenders to wear a tracking device. The funding will be sought subsequent to the legislation being developed.
The Prisoners Review Board already has the power to require parolees to wear a tracking device.
