I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The government has given a commitment to build a station at South Perth by 2010. (2) In order to make space available for the construction of the station platform at a later date and to avoid undue disruption to the freeway and the railway, the government will carry out preliminary works now as part of the New MetroRail project. The south-bound freeway lanes will be moved to the east and straightened over a distance of approximately 750 metres after which the existing road surface will be removed, thereby creating the space for the future station. The works include the laying of a new section of a major underground water main along the eastern boundary of the freeway so that the pipe will not be beneath the new freeway lanes; the relocation of other major underground services; the construction of concrete barriers to separate the relocated south-bound lanes and the railway; the construction of a temporary busway which, in time, will be used as the base upon which the railway will be laid - this will involve relocating fencing, drainage and lighting; and making provision under the relocated freeway lanes for the connection of services to the station. The railway tracks, overhead power system and other railway services will be constructed in their final position to accommodate the future platform.
