WATER SUPPLY - CHARGES
I refer to the Treasurer’s media statement dated 7 May 2007 in which he announced increases in water charges and claimed that demand for water meant water charges for the average householder would increase by 52c a week or 8.07 per cent. (1) Will the Treasurer advise how he arrived at the figure of 52c a week? (2) Does this increased charge of 52c a week include the water used in household sewerage systems and include the proportionate increase in the fixed charge? (3) Is it the case, when the items referred to in (2) are included, that the actual water charge for the average household would increase to approximately $1.30 a week rather than 52c a week? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The 52c a week increase for a representative household consuming 300 kilolitres per annum includes both the annual water service charge and a water usage charge. In 2007-08 water expenditure for the representative household will increase by $27.30 or 8.07 per cent. If this were spread across the year, it would equal approximately 52c a week. (2) The 52c a week includes both the annual water service charge and water usage charge. The representative household is assumed to consume 300 kilolitres per annum, which includes the water used in household sewerage systems. (3) No. The 52c a week increase does not include increases in charges for sewerage and drainage. If increases in sewerage and drainage charges for a representative household are included, the total increase in 2007-08 would be $63.23. Spread across a year this would equal an increase of approximately $1.22 a week.
