LOCAL GOVERNMENT ADVISORY BOARD — SERVICE DELIVERY TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES
I refer the minister to the Local Government Advisory Board inquiry report into service delivery to Indigenous communities that he has been sitting on for six months. (1) Why will he not release the report to the 24 local governments likely to be affected by recommendations in the report? (2) Will the recommendations of the report have a budgetary impact on each of these 24 local governments likely to be affected? (3) How are these local governments expected to prepare for any impacts on them if the minister will not let them know exactly what the report’s recommendations are? Mr G.M. CASTRILLI

(1)-(3) The Local Government Advisory Board reviewed local government service delivery to Indigenous communities. The draft report was dated October 2008. Consultation has since occurred with the Department of Indigenous Affairs, the Department of Housing and the federal government to look at a coordinated approach between the state and the federal government on the funding for this whole area. This is one part of the overall activities taking place under the Council of Australian Governments agreement on Indigenous disadvantage. I understand that the federal government will continue to fund that application pending agreements being reached. That is what we are doing: we are taking a holistic approach.
