With reference to the 14 proposed beach developments listed on page seven of The West Australian of 18 March 2004, I ask - (1) Will the Coastal Planning and Coordination Council be addressing these proposed developments? (2) If yes, how? (3) If no, why not? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) The Coastal Planning and Coordination Council’s role is to provide high level integrated strategic advice to government, through the Western Australian Planning Commission, on sustainable coastal planning and management through the development of policy and strategies/plans at state and regional scales. The CPCC has initiated the development of a Perth coastal planning strategy that will provide guidance on future land use and development along the Perth coastline. In this way, it will be setting the framework that will affect many of the coastal developments listed in The West Australian article referred to. The CPCC will assist in the implementation of the state planning policy No 2.6, state coastal planning policy, and, hence, the assessment of planning proposals along the State’s coastline. In addition, the relationship between the CPCC and the commission, including the dual membership of the chair of the CPCC, ensures that the CPCC will have appropriate input to the decision making on development proposals affecting the coast.
