SCHOOLS — ABORIGINAL AND ISLANDER EDUCATION
OFFICERS
802. Mr M. McGOWAN to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Considering the immense
disadvantage that Aboriginal kids suffer across Western Australia, how is it
needs-based or student-centred learning to take 105 full-time equivalent
Aboriginal education officers away from those children's schools?

We in this state provide the best support for Aboriginal
students. Aboriginal students are treated like any other student in Western
Australia. If the need is great, the resources are there.

Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Wait and see. We will continue to improve education. I remind members that one
of the last great reforms in education was in early childhood education, when
kindergarten and preprimary programs were introduced in the 1990s for every
child in every school in this state. Thirteen years on, no state in Australia
has been able to match what the Liberal–National government did in
early childhood education. During the Labor Party's time, it did not
progress in education at all.
