A WA parliamentary question addresses peak-period overcrowding on Perth-Fremantle train services. The Minister for Transport responds, stating that overcrowding is not currently a serious issue due to recent capacity increases, but acknowledges Friday evening constraints. PERTH-FREMANTLE PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICES — PEAK-PERIOD OVERCROWDING

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question and for his interest in the subject. (1) There is no serious overcrowding on Transperth peak-period train services between Perth and Fremantle at present. In late June 2009 Transperth increased capacity by approximately 31 per cent on its morning peak-period services to Perth by providing an additional 12 railcars on the Fremantle line. There is not the same passenger demand for train services to Fremantle during the afternoon peak period, both before or since 29 June 2009. However, Transperth does acknowledge that some capacity constraints are experienced on Friday evenings on all rail lines at peak times when special events—for example, AFL matches—clash with the evening peak-period rail services. (2) January 2010 is when additional railcars will be available for strengthening a two-railcar set train to a four-railcar set train on this line if it is seen as a system-wide priority.
