TAXI OWNERS LEGISLATION 259. Mr BIRNEY to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure: When will the minister bring country taxi owners under the same legislation as city taxi owners? Ms MacTIERNAN
AnswerView source ↗
I hope that the Government is able to introduce some legislation into this Parliament by the end of the year. Of course, it wants to ensure that the issues are fully understood by all country taxi owners and that there is broad support for the change. The taxi owners association supports the general principle. Some of that detail must now be tied down. The Government must find out which obligations imposed on city taxi operators under the current legislation the country drivers want to take on. They might not want competition from small charter vehicles, as metropolitan taxi drivers have. A few issues must be sorted out. The Government supports it in principle and hopes to have legislation before Parliament by the end of the year.
