ROEBOURNE REGIONAL
PRISON — AIR CONDITIONING
1404. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to a media article from ABC
Pilbara titled ''Roebourne residents fear extreme summer will put elders'
health at risk after record-breaking winter heat'' of 18 September 2024,
and the WA government's commitment to install air conditioning at
Roebourne Regional Prison this financial year.
(1) What date is the air
conditioning installation due to be completed?
(2) Has work already begun to
install air conditioning at Roebourne Regional Prison?
(3) Does the
government plan to force prisoners at Roebourne Regional Prison to endure
another stifling hot spring and summer without air conditioning, given the
record-breaking winter temperatures and forecasts of a warmer than average
summer ahead?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The project
to install air conditioning in the main accommodation units at Roebourne
Regional Prison is targeted for completion during the 2024–25 financial
year.
(2) Yes.
(3) The
Department of Justice has a number of measures in place to manage heat risks at
Roebourne Regional Prison. This includes fans in every cell, air conditioning
in the recreation hall, prisoner visits area and female activities area, access
to ice machines and cold-water bubblers, and shade structures in the main areas of the prison. There are also
air-conditioned cells available for prisoners with medical conditions. The prison maintains a flexible routine to
adjust to the conditions and ensures all planned recreational activities are closely supervised. Cell temperatures in the accommodation units are
monitored through the day and medical staff are on duty to ensure prisoners'
health and safety.
