I refer to the Out-of-Contract Register for apprentices and trainees, and I ask -
(1) Once an apprentice or trainee requests that his or her name is placed on the Register, will the Minister confirm that a person can remain on the Register for a six month period only, unless they request a further six month period?
(2) Is being placed on the Register automatic or does the apprentice or trainee have to request their name being placed on the Register?
(3) What exactly does the Apprenticentre do to assist apprentices or trainees to find a new employer in order to complete their training contract?
(4) How many times in the six month period following registration is each apprentice or trainee contacted?
(5) Are any figures available as to how many apprentices or trainees have found a new employer as a result of being placed on the Register?
(6) If yes to (5), will the Minister provide those figures?
(7) If no to (5), why not?
(8) If an apprentice or trainee is still on the Register at the conclusion of 12 months, and their names are then removed, what, if any, assistance is given to them?

(1) Yes, the apprentice will remain on the register for a six month period only. Extensions are granted in circumstances where an apprentice may require additional time to complete a unit of competency with the training provider.
(2) The apprentice or trainee has to request their name to be placed on the Register.
(3) ApprentiCentre assists apprentices or trainees as follows:
o Provides information on the Jobs Board and how to access jobs advertised;
o Provides information on how to register their interest on Jobs Board which automatically sends out an alert when a job in their field is advertised;
o Provides details of apprentices and trainees on the Register to prospective employers;
o Provides contact details and information to apprentices and trainees on assistance available through Career Centre and Workforce Development Centres; and
o Provides contact details for Group Training Organisations which may be able to offer them a placement.
(4) The apprentice will receive regular alerts regarding apprenticeship opportunities through the Jobs Board, together with a letter offering further assistance.
(5) Yes
(6) Yes. Since the Out of Contract Register was introduced on 10 June 2009,
1,590 apprentices and 94 trainees have been recruited by employers to recommence their apprenticeship/traineeship.
(7) Not applicable.
(8) Prior to apprentices being removed from the Register they are advised to contact the Department if they require any assistance. Note that an apprentice/trainee is normally only on the Register for a period of six months as per question 1 above.
