I refer the minister to the Xstrata situation at Windimurra. (1) Will the minister confirm that the company is willing to relinquish its mining tenement over the vanadium deposit? (2) If so, have any proponents come forward to express an interest in taking up the leases? (3) Does the Government intend to accelerate the process of making the land available for others to apply for in light of Xstrata’s position? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. I am advised as follows - (1) Executives of Xstrata have advised the Minister for State Development that the company is willing to relinquish its mining tenements. However, the company has not to date submitted any surrender documents to the Department of Industry and Resources over any of the leases at Windimurra. (2) One company has expressed an interest in acquiring the Windamurra assets. (3) The degree to which any process can be accelerated depends on Xstrata and/or Xstrata and a purchaser of the Windimurra assets reaching agreement.
