C-series trains—faults
414. Hon Simon Ehrenfeld to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to recent
reports in The West Australian regarding
various Metronet safety failures, including a driver cab catching fire and a floor
plate coming free on a railcar.
(1) In the railcar tendering process, what weight
is given to each of the following factors:
(a) safety;
(b) cost;
(c) timeframe for delivery; and
(d) componentry made in WA?
(2) What process of consultation occurred with the
train drivers before the awarding of any tenders and what consultation has
occurred with them since the reported incidents?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(2) I reject the premise of the
question. Safety is a fundamental consideration in the delivery of our public
transport services. Following the award of the C-series contract, a committee
consisting of current train drivers was established, which approved and
endorsed key aspects of the driver's cab design.
