FIRE AND EMERGENCY
SERVICES — VOLUNTEERS — PROTECTIONS
1122. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to comments made by the
Minister for Emergency Services during motions on notice today that his government has or will engage a consultant to
investigate how it may provide comparable protections to emergency service volunteers to those in paid employment undertaking the same functions.
(1) Can the minister confirm that a consultant
has been engaged; and, if not, when an engagement will occur?
(2) When does the minister expect to
have the advice or report of the consultant?
(3) Did the
minister engage a consultant ahead of his 6 April 2023 decision to provide PTSD
presumptive protection to career firefighters?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
the question.
(1)–(2) We
are in the process of engaging a consultant. We will be able to advise when the
advice will be received once the consultant is engaged.
(3) In relation
to career firefighters, the answer is no, because we engage some volunteers and
emergency service volunteers but, of course, local government engages them too.
If we are going to do something for state government employees, we have to
consider what the implications are for local government, so we are doing that
at the same time.
