MELVILLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Once again we have a fantastic success story with the work of the Carpenter government and the effort that it has put into ensuring that each school performs at its peak. We have done fantastic work at Melville Senior High School, and this work has been very well received by that particular community. We have invested $5.2 million in Melville Senior High School. The scope of that work probably reflects how run down the school had become during the term of the previous government, and how little attention that government had paid to this particular school. The scope of the work included a new library, a dedicated aviation centre with a flight simulator, and a high-tech wireless computer network. Media and arts instruction has also been enhanced by the creation of a dedicated art facility and the addition of a new studio for media, drama, dance and music, a multimedia laboratory with industry capacity computers, and an editing suite that is a part of the media production and design course - one of the new courses of study. Three visual arts studios, kilns, arts storage and music areas have been included, as well as two instrumental areas with a keyboard laboratory so that students may compose music using their computers. I am also pleased to report to the house that Melville Senior High School has been included in the state’s academic talent program. The program is about encouraging, as members would expect, students to excel, to be their best and to imagine the possibilities; that is, the types of people they would like to become and what they would like to do in terms of their employment aspirations. The academic talent program will allow the students at Melville Senior High School to build on their already very impressive academic track record. I am also pleased to tell the house that the Carpenter government has set aside $40 000 extra for an artwork program at the school. We are certainly committed to improving the educational outcomes of all students, and the sort of investment that we are making in Melville we are also making in many other schools throughout the state. I am very proud, as the minister, to be associated with such positive initiatives in taking the education system forward.
