CHEVRON WORKERS —
BARROW ISLAND
232. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Minister for Commerce:
I refer to the
question that I asked last Thursday about workers being stranded on Barrow
Island during the category 3 cyclone Olwyn last week and the inappropriate
amount of accommodation, and the minister's response, which states —
I will inquire into the matter
and get advice from my department. If there is a necessity for Worksafe to
investigate the matter, I will take it up to ensure that happens.
What action has the
minister taken on this matter and will WorkSafe be investigating why workers
were not evacuated; and, if not, why not?

I thank the member for the question. Since that time,
complaints have been lodged by unions as to the conduct of Chevron and as to
the evacuation processes, and various other complaints about the facilities
that have been made available or were available to workers on Barrow Island and
at the Wheatstone project. There has also been a report of an incident
involving an employee of John Holland, who, I think, was operating a crane
prior to the cyclone striking that island, and that is under investigation by
Comcare, as John Holland is a member of the commonwealth safety scheme. But
WorkSafe is investigating several complaints that have been received by it, and
I expect a report in due course.
