GERALDTON PORT UPGRADE
Will the minister report on the most recent upgrade to the Geraldton port and how that upgrade will assist the iron ore industry of the mid-west? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for the question. The member was with us last week when we opened new berth 5, a dedicated iron ore berth for the Geraldton port. It is a testament to the success of the port enhancement scheme on which, in 2003, the member worked so closely with us to deliver to the Geraldton port what, after an absence of 40 years, we now have; that is, an iron ore industry back in the mid-west. So successful was this project that we have had to develop our new project—our $49 million creation of berth 5—a special iron ore facility. When we came to government, because the previous government had a policy of doing nothing for the Geraldton port and the mid-west region—a do-nothing policy—and there were fights between the Liberal Party and National Party about where the money would go, less than three million tonnes were going through the Geraldton port. The facts speak for themselves. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : I call the member for Roe to order for the first time. Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : It is tonnage envy that they have, Mr Speaker. In the 2006-07 financial year 6.5 million tonnes went through that port and in the current financial year we are expecting over seven million tonnes and next financial year we expect to get up to 10 million tonnes. It is an extraordinary growth in the tonnage and, very importantly, it has enabled the iron ore industry to get off the ground and to provide the cash flow for those companies that want to now go forward to develop the Oakajee port. It is a great news story and a testament to our imaginative investment in the mid-west.
