SHARKS — HAZARD
MITIGATION — DRUM LINES
823. Hon RICK MAZZA to the minister representing the
Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to Minister Kelly's
13 September media statement titled ''Community to have their say on SMART
drumline trial''. Is the government's decision to have the
community decide the locations of Shark-Management-Alert-in-Real-Time drum
lines and satellite receivers in the capes region consistent with its position
of relying on scientific research, as per Minister Kelly's 14 August
media comment that the ''McGowan Government is open to any shark
mitigation measure that is backed up by science''?

On behalf of the minister
representing the Minister for Fisheries, I thank the honourable member for some
notice of the question. The Minister for Fisheries has provided the following
answer.
The SMART drum line location options
and potential satellite receiver locations have been developed by the
department on a scientific basis. The outcome of the community consultation
will assist the department in determining the final locations.
