DEPARTMENT OF SPORT AND RECREATION —
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
134. Ms A.R. MITCHELL to the Minister for Sport and
Recreation:
Early this month, the minister announced the opening date of
the new Perth Arena. Can he also update the house on the progress of other
infrastructure projects of significance within the sport and recreation
portfolio?

I thank the member for Kingsley for the question. Sporting
infrastructure, sporting programs and the importance of sport have been a real
focus of this government. I have often said that for many years federal and
state governments of both persuasions have talked a lot about sport and what
should and should not be done, but this government really is doing it.
Infrastructure is an important part of what should be done, but it is not the
only part. Sporting programs et cetera are very important. I read with interest
the recent reports about the Perth Glory fixture against the Central Coast
Mariners. It was a hot day of, I think, 36 degrees. It was difficult for the
players, and also I heard reports about the extreme discomfort of the spectators
at nib Stadium. I know that a Rugby League game was played last year in
terribly rainy, windy and cold conditions. The eastern stand has well and truly
had its day. Our decision to progress with the nib Stadium redevelopment,
focusing initially on the eastern stand, has been an excellent decision. It
will certainly put spectator amenity first. It will put fans first and will
provide a better and more comfortable experience for mum and dad so that they
can enjoy the facility. I am delighted that in July 2013 spectators at the
games of the Western Force, Perth Glory and, hopefully, eventually a Rugby
League franchise will have a significant and much better fan experience. I
recently met with the former member for Armadale, the Mayor of the City of
Vincent. I know that the City of Vincent shares our excitement about this new
facility. It will be a real boost for those sports.
Also on the issue of infrastructure,
I am the father of four daughters who have played a lot of netball and I am
very excited about the new netball facility. It will be a great facility and
one that netball has waited for for a long, long time. As the father of four
daughters who have all played netball, I often joke that I have seen nearly a
thousand games of netball. When making that joke, I make the point that netball
is important, especially for young girls. There are issues with young girls'
physical activity et cetera. Netball is one of the key reasons that young women
in this state stay engaged in healthy levels of physical activity. This centre
is very important. I am pleased with the progress that is being made on the
construction of the new high-performance baseball–netball facility; it
is scheduled to commence later this year. It will include the West Coast Fever.
I am looking forward to seeing the former national coach, Norma Plummer, and
Catherine Cox perform with the Fever. We wish them all the best. The Fever is
overdue for success; hopefully, it can have some this year. The important point
about that facility is that it is not just for elite athletes. Elite athletes
are very important, but it will also be accessible to community groups. I am
sure that that will inspire lots of young netballers around Western Australia.
Also on the matter of
infrastructure, I recently watched the first round of the V8 Supercars season.
Mr
C.C. Porter interjected.
Mr
T.K. WALDRON : I watched it on television. Our round will be held in May. Of
course, I visited Barbagallo Raceway earlier this year to inspect the progress
being made on the redevelopment. It is a credit to the WA Sporting Car Club and
its team because when it is completed, it will be a really good facility. It
will provide a much better experience for spectators and competitors, with the
new infield pit lane and garages and the new race control, media and medical
centre. There will be hardstand back-of-house services with safety innovations.
It is a great project.
In closing, I am also excited about
the Olympic Games. I met with the Western Australian Olympic Council yesterday.
Once again, Western Australia is punching above its weight. I look forward to
reviewing the final project definition plan for the Western Australian
Institute of Sport facility. I take this opportunity to wish our Western
Australian athletes, many of whom are now striving for selection for a spot in
the London team, all the very best. The government is providing excellent
sporting facilities for Western Australia to support sport across the state. We
will continue to deliver these well-conceived, well-planned and very important
facilities that will advantage all Western Australians.
