GOVERNMENT’S RAIL AND ROAD PROJECTS - COMPENSATION CLAIMS
In the house on 21 June, the minister promised to take personal responsibility for the mitigation and compensation claims of my constituents when she said - . . . the government simply cannot absolve itself of its responsibility and say that responsibility lies with the contractor. . . . . . . I do not believe that just because we have entered into a contract, it absolves us from responsibility to ensure that legitimate claims of damage are addressed. (1) How does the minister explain the fact that most of the 15 people who attended Parliament House on that day have not heard from her department or its agencies? (2) Why is it that only one of the 15 people, who happens to be a constituent of the member for Riverton, has received any compensation despite her commitment that all legitimate claims would be addressed? (3) Was this just another empty promise by the minister; and, if not, when will she finalise these claims? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(3) I would not for one moment take the member’s assertions of fact as having any relationship to reality. I am quite happy to get that information for the member. It certainly does not accord with the records that I have with me. I am more than happy to table a report tomorrow.
