I thank the member for Wanneroo for the question. His area
has had a huge uptake of this program. I think all members will agree that this
program has been great for their areas. It is timely to update members on this
program, because we are now in the period of registration for winter sport.
Several members interjected.
Mr
T.K. WALDRON : It is very important. I like to keep members informed.
Ms
R. Saffioti interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for West Swan, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr
T.K. WALDRON : This program is a partnership between the state and local
governments, and families can apply for up to $200 towards their child's
club fees if they qualify. I am delighted to advise the house that since
September 2011, more than 26 500 Western Australians have become KidSport kids.
This program has been an outstanding success. In fact, so far this year, more
than 4 000 vouchers have been distributed. To give members a bit of
information, 126 local governments are helping to administer the program, and
35 514 vouchers have gone to 26 553 kids, with 60 per cent to boys and 30 per
cent to girls. Just under 47 per cent of the vouchers have gone to kids who
have never previously been registered for this program. The outcome of this
will be great social benefits, for not only those kids, but also our
communities, in addressing a range of issues that we talk about in this place.
This is not the be-all and end-all, but it is making a difference. At-risk kids
from Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are
highly represented. There have also been almost 2 500 vouchers for children
with disabilities. That underlines the great value of this program
I will run through a couple of the
areas that are represented by members in this place. The member for West Swan
would be interested to know that the City of Swan has distributed just under 2 000
vouchers, or 5.5 per cent of the allocation, and 408 of those vouchers have
gone to children who live in Ellenbrook. I think that will make a difference to
the member's community. The member for Wanneroo, who asked the
question, would be interested to know that eight per cent of the total vouchers
distributed have gone through the City of Wanneroo, and 261 of those have
registered with the Wanneroo Junior Football Club. That is a huge uptake. The
member for Albany would be delighted to know that Albany is the top centre in
the state for this program, with 771 vouchers distributed.
In concluding, both boys and girls
are well represented across a range of sports. Variations of the KidSport
program are now being undertaken by other state governments, because of the
success of this program, and that is a good thing. I am very proud of what this
government is delivering through sport. We are investing particularly in the
future of our young people. As I said, all members will get the details,
because they were sent yesterday to their electorate offices, and I thank them
for their ongoing support. This is a great program and a great partnership with
the community, and it is achieving real outcomes.
